Exploring Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah Georgia

Cemetery - I

Where do you even begin to describe a place like Bonaventure Cemetery?

I’ll forgo giving any sort of direct report on the location other then, if you have a chance, visit it. It’s simply hauntingly beautiful. With that said, I will write over the obnoxious antics of historic tour guides and my experience with one at the cemetery.

I really do consider myself very spiritual in nature. I have a heavy respect for the places where we lay our love ones to rest. With that said, during my exploration of Bonaventure a tour guide apparently decided I was obviously up to no good and planned on disrespecting/damaging the cemetery. It’s truly amazing what conclusions people jump to when you have a camera and some people nearby.

The straw that broke the camals back was near the end of our time there. My fiance and I, with a model and our pooch walked across nearly the entire cemetery and we found ourselves the oldest and most beautiful of all the plots. As I was shooting the model among some of the tree’s overlooking the river, my fiance continued on only to be stopped by the tour guide in her little seat of power (the bus). I noticed something was amiss and hurried over to my fiance, given the distance it took me a moment but just as I was to walk up the bus door closed and the tour guide continued on her way.

Cemetery - II

My fiance was in a state of shock from what had just transpired. Effectively, the tour guide had threatened us (as a whole group) with action from a mysterious security force that looked over one particular plot. And that I would be sued if caught taking pictures of that particular plot. And that the tour guide had decided to verbally take out her disgruntled frustration on my fiance since she was obviously the most evil of our group standing there with our dog on a leech. I’m really at a loss for words at how we all were treated by that tour guide.

There is a real reason why I’d never pay for any sort of service like that. That guide provided a perfect example of it.

So, all things considered, I will say if you are ever in the area do make a special trip to see the lovely cemetery. And if you have any rotten vegetables with you, please throw them at the nearest Savannah Tour Bus.
