I think it’d be amusing to begin by saying that green really is my favorite color. So, when Lindsay mentioned to me she was interested in using the absinthe fairy as an inspiration for a shoot. How really could I say no? As with most shoots, it’s all in the little details and I tasked Lindsay to see what she’d be able to construct as fair as a setting for the concept she’d been designing.

Needless to say, Lindsay (as always) did a knock out job of preparing the setting we used during the shoot. We experimented a bit with different lighting techniques but ultimately found that sometimes it’s best to just stick with something natural then trying to force light to do things it’s not going to do.

As with most of my shoots now, I requested that Lindsay write up a little bit on the shoot, here’s some of what she had to say!

Absinthe, The Green Fairy, the psychoactive highly alcoholic drink that was most popular in the late 19th and early 20th century France among Parisian artists and writers, such as Vincent van Gogh & Oscar Wilde.

Honestly, I’ve tried the stuff before, of course not the real stuff since apparently it only exists elsewhere then the United States, & boy am I not a fan, it’s got a rich licorice taste. Licorice? Dislike. But what drew me into desiring to do a photo shoot themed around the drink itself is the rich greens and golds. Thankfully the house I reside in is a wonderland full of dark corners, angels & goddesses, mirrors upon mirrors, & apparently plenty of green & gold items. As for the “Absinthe” in the photos, I wound up buying lime jello & using that instead of the real stuff. We wound up taking photos on the red couch, which wasn’t planned until we were already taking photos, goes to show spontaneous locations can sometimes be the best! I walked around my house gathering every green & gold item I could days before the actual shoot to incorporate, and I think the photos speak for themselves on how excellent the colors shined through. The one thing I know you might complain about or notice, is the lack of sugar cubes. In case you didn’t know, sugar cubes are a vital part in the preparation of drinking absinthe, but both Matthew and myself checked numerous grocery stores and all were lacking, the sweet cubes of sugar. Needless to say, I think the photos are darn well sweet enough without them, and nothing caught on fire either! Huzzah!

When planning a creative shoot, its always a pleasant surprise when a model approaches me with a concept she’d like to tackle. Lindsay approached me earlier in October looking to do a shoot based closely to the movie American Psycho. I hadn’t actually seen the movie in the past, and after reviewing it one night, I felt it was quite fitting for that time of year and interestingly disturbing.

While it isn’t a surprise at all, Lindsay did a spectacular job on the set that day. She brought a whole host of images for us to review and try to fundamentally recreate. Here’s a few examples of what we were able to accomplish in our short shoot.

At the time of writing this, I’m still in the process of trying to create an animation based on some of the shots we took. I’ll try to link that on this post once it’s been completed.

American Psycho, if you haven’t already seen it, do yourself a favor, rent it, buy it, coughdownloadit, do what you need to do, but WATCH IT.

Prepare yourself for the most arrogant, psychotic, swanky, and gorgeous serial killer you’ve ever seen.

After my fascination with senor Bale himself, and adoring all the marvelous acting jobs he has done, i decided it was time to take on an American Psycho: Patrick Bateman themed photo shoot. I researched images from the movie extensively & thoroughly, practicing his facial expressions, which side of the face his tongue was positioned as he was licking the blood off his face, which way the blade of the knife was facing, weather or not he had gloves on during a scene, whether or not his shirt had stripes or not, and more importantly, to have Huey Lewis & The News playing during the photo shoot, it’s hip to be square guys! I brought a blue eyemask for the photo shoot, but decided away with it since well uh, he was quite topless in the scene with the mask, so that idea was scrapped. I soon realized it is MUCH harder to capture an angry psychotic face without looking like a constipated Frankenstein.

Working with Dim Horizon Studio, Matthew, is such an easy going, non-stressful & super down to earth photo shoot, he really does make things flow easily. The outcome of the photo shoot was priceless, I hope someday the photos make a round and sexy Christian Bale just might see them and laugh his ass off & secretly desire to pat me on the back, wherever that fine piece of swank is.

I don’t think I’ll ever honestly be able to properly communicate my fascination with abandoned locations. I want to say part of it all stems from the simple fact that forgotten places and things are simply that, forgotten. With my photography, my underlying goal with all my work is to capture something unique and beautiful.

Seeing places rarely seen and capturing a moment in there fall is a beautiful thing. In many ways this can be related back to my enjoyment of the emotional and dark works of Edgar Allen Poe as well as H. P. Lovecraft.

With all that said, I was contacted by a local model interested in shooting a Alice in Wonderland themed shoot. I, of course, suggested one of my abandonments that I had been trying to work heavily in. A deal was struck and the day arrived. I was shocked and kicking myself as I drove up to the location to see a giant backhoe tear down the last remnants of the roof. One more beautiful place swallowed by time and development. Lucky for me, I knew of one other place we could go nearby and the shoot overall was a tremendous success. (And I now have someplace new to let my creativity go.)
