Speaking to the Kennesaw Abandonment and the location I spoke of previously as the Kennesaw Mountain Abandonment, this home really was relatively new to the abandonment scene. While, I can’t say for certain and I’m only using my skills of observation to determine it, this house couldn’t have been more then 3 to 6 years old. Scrappers obviously had their way with the home (most of the fixtures, pipes, & wire was ripped out of the house) but the overall structure was something you might have seen in any new development in Kennesaw.

It looked as though it would have been a lovely home if it hadn’t been for a truly horrible location. The driveway wasn’t really finished nor did it look as though it was ever finished and across the street was a power station. So… if you don’t mind glowing in the dark and having to have a 4 wheel drive to park at your house, it was definitely a home for you.

With all those things aside though, here’s a gallery of the images I was able to create in this amazing location.

I’d like to conclude this article with more shots of this lovely house that is no more. I always feel a little regret when dealing with places like this. I always hate to see them go, but it does make me work harder to take advantage of places that aren’t lost to the world.

As with the last couple of posts on my site with Dahlia and Jordan, this shoot was at that nice little abandonment I discovered in Kennesaw.

Meisha contacted me through Model Mayhem looking to do something different then the standard portraits she had in her portfolio. I offered for her to review my inspiration gallery and from that we were able to narrow our focus. With that in mind, we met one weekend and set off to take advantage of this lovely location. I will take a moment to say, I’ve posted these articles totally in the wrong sequence. Technically speaking, I shot Lindsay, then Meisha, then Dahlia and last Jordan.

I’ve found that once you discover an interesting location like an abandoned house, You have to do as much as you can to take advantage of it while it lasts. After loosing the one location I mentioned before, I vowed to myself that I wouldn’t let any other opportunities go by the wayside.

It was early last year that I was contacted with the concept of doing a “Doll” themed shoot. I immediately jumped at the idea thinking that would be perfect to incorporate into my models in abandonments series. Dahlia really didn’t disappoint in the slightest with wardrobe, hair, or make-up. Her looks smacks so perfectly of a vintage aesthetic that the pictures nearly shot themselves as we went through the abandoned location.

And now a few words from Ms. Dahlia Danger.

This photoshoot was the first time i had ever worked with Matt of Dim Horizons Studio before. We met up at a easy access location right near the abandoned house. We talked a while and Matt made me feel very comfortable, almost like it was just me and a friend doing a photo shoot, now because we were in a nasty old abandoned house Matt made sure i was comfortable and safe the whole time. (which is very cool) we joked around and like i said it was a very comfortable environment. Matt also let me do what ever pose that came in mind and that was great made me feel more involved with his work. i would definitely work with Matt again.

Well… It’s really been awhile since I’ve written about the lovely Jordan on the site. With that said, I’ve actually worked with her a great deal over the course of 2009 and only now have just begun to get these articles written to show case her tremendous creative growth.

If you’ve really paid close attention to my site, you might recognize the location. I actually “discovered” or more accurately “used for the first time” this location on the day of my Alice in Wonderland inspired shoot with Lindsay. It wasn’t quite as lovely a find as the location mentioned in my last post but to continue with my project of models in abandonments, it was suitable enough.

Here’s a little showcase of my work with Jordan that the abandoned house location. We had a mixture of wardrobe options on this day long extravaganza but ultimately she decided upon something with a little country flair with this location/shoot and I must say it worked quite well.

I’ve always felt that when it comes to unique and memorable photographs, the location is one of the key aspects that either is overlooked, underplayed, or outright skirted around by post processing in most photographs today. When you begin to involve a model, while he or she may be now a key subject of the photograph, typically the background or location is blurred to narrow your focus on the subject while I’ve always felt it has more of a role to play then that.

Ranting and raving aside, I really like to share a place that was demolished last year and say these abandoned locations are like delicate flowers (with very sharp thorns to the uneducated) that deserve our respect and reverence.

This is one such location that I happened upon during the tail end of 2008. Throughout most of 2009, I was able to host a number of shoots there and all of which resulted in some pretty spectacular shots. Here’s a small gallery for you to review if you’d care to see. (Two of my shoots at the location were nude and those images have been censored to keep this article in a relatively PG – 13.)

But, heading back to the real showpiece of this article. I have to say, the loss of this location during 2009 was a bit of a shock. I was lucky, or not (depending upon how you view the situation) to learn of it being demolished on a day I intended to shoot there. I literally drove up as I watched a backhoe tear down the last remaining wall and drag it off to the side. It may be lost, but ultimately, it won’t be forgotten. Here’s a closer look into this truly extraordinary place that is now lost.

I’ve always been exceptionally good at remembering faces and traits about people. Frighteningly so and as in the tune, I still remember specific physical qualities from friends or acquaintances I may have only met once. With that, my story really has two parts, when I initially ran into Sandy and when I actually had the pleasure of working with her.

To start this entire affair, I initially met Sandy roughly 3 years ago at a local restaurant. Most will immediately have to admit, her look is exceptionally unique, it’s really not often you see a blazing redhead with dreadlocks running around. With that said, I was immediately drawn to ask her if she’d be interested in a shoot.

Laughably though, I ended getting distracted by my co-workers at the time and forgot about it. I did kick myself for it after the fact. Now, fast forward a few years, guess who happened to message me through Model Mayhem interested in a shoot? The rest, as they say, is history.

She is a tremendously creative individual and her professionalism is really top notched. If you need someone with her unique look in the Atlanta area definitely look this talented lady up through model mayhem!

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Julie actually a number of times throughout the past few years. However, a number of weeks ago I was able to take her to one of my favorite locations in Kennesaw. (It is also a sad fact, after our shoot the location was demolished.)

Julie did a spectacular job though as far as the shoot was concerned. It had been her first abandonment shoot and I think the environment took a little getting used to for her. It isn’t every day you’re asked to do wardrobe changes in the rotting remains of a kitchen. With that said though, Julie does really have a jaw dropping assortment of wardrobe options. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll be able to arrange a studio session in the next couple of months.

If you’re planning on attending Dragon*Con 2009 in Atlanta, I’d keep your eyes peeled for Julie. She and her husband will certainly be the bell of the ball when the time comes for her to dive through her delightful closet of goodies.

As one more example to highlight, I worked with a talented actress and model Brandell for the second time recently. We wanted to go for a overall theme similar to the movie’s she’d had been casting for at the time. We ultimately decided the abandoned speedway would give her the most creative flexibility while still maintaining that urban feel she was going for.

From a laughable perspective, Brandell was the first model to pull a gun on me… and I have to say the shots turned out fantastic! Her ability to give a fierce expression with convincing eyes truly made those shots memorable. As for the images I show below, I have to say they were my favorites from our shoot. In both, I experimented heavily with toning to help convey the overall emotions in the shot as well as showcase her versatility with expression.

While Brandell is currently out of the Atlanta market, if you ever should get the chance, do try to schedule a shoot with her. She’s really talented and I can’t wait to see her in a feature film in the next few years!

A number of weeks ago, I happened to catch a very beautiful model coming through town during her spring break. Like most photographers, I’m always searching for a fresh face and a new perspective to work with. We spoke heavily through Model Mayhem and decided we would give the old speedway ruins a shot for our creative location.

I have to say, having experienced it, it’s a great asset to work with a model that has a number of years experience in both yoga and dance. I find when reviewing my inspiration sources, I do tend gravitate toward more artistic poses. Beth did a spectacular job during our shoot to try to incorporate something just a little different from the norm. The shoot itself went splendidly although the harsh lighting at that time (and at the location in general) was very difficult to compensate for. We strolled one large circuit around the entire speedway while stopping quickly in the middle to change wardrobe.

All and all, I’m quite pleased with the shoot. However, I do need to re-evaluate how I handle really bright/direct light situations. If you’re in Michigan, I’d highly recommend contacting her. Her creative perspective as well as her talents & experience were truly a great asset.

Amanda was one more of those individuals that contacted me through my casting call on Model Mayhem for Alternative Models. She really is a creative soul when it comes to this whole affair. Her main desire from our shoot was to see a rather interesting location and get some exciting shots in the process. While the lighting was harsh that late afternoon, I hope to work with her again sometime in 2009!
